My Students

When my guitar string needed replacing and a student wrote a get well note to my B-string, the idea struck me that music is more to students than singing, dancing, and performing. The students engage freely with one another in creative projects. They rely on one another for their musical and personal stability. Group work gives them collaboration. Rudimentary skill practice gives them familiarity and a musical vocabulary. And musical instruments motivate students to perform beautifully.

Our school services a low income mostly Asian and Hispanic community in Queens NY.

Many students spend a full day at school and then a full evening at after-school programs because both of their parents are employed. Our students range from Pre-K through 5th grade. Watching their smiling faces while they grow as musicians and people in our safe engaging space makes every effort on my part worthwhile.

My Project

Xylophones are durable and last for decades. They are simple to use as well as versatile enough for students in all grade levels to manipulate. Many students do not participate in chorus or band and xylophones make the experience of successful music performance accessible to them. On xylophone, they will experience many different roles of the instruments in a performing ensemble. We already approach popular music a number of times each year, I would love for them to be able to perform folk and popular songs instrumentally in addition to singing, which will help ease in some of the students who wish to participate but lack the confidence.

My students consistently demonstrate courageousness in performance as well as mutual respect for one another as audience members.

Their ability to work together fits so well with the spirit of music making in the style of Karl Orff, which focuses on percussive instruments such as xylophone, movement, and singing. Each year, every class puts on a live performance and where possible, xylophones will provide a great cross curricular connection for music to enter their general classroom and make memories that last a lifetime.
