This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is comprised of diverse students. Each day they show up with enthusiastic attitudes and wonderful learning ideas. I truly work in a learning community. Students, staff and everyone are teachers and learners. Our students are great thinkers and inquirers. They are constantly asking questions and collaborating whether virtually or in person. Each of my students has wonderful outside-the-box thinking and they learn through discovery and self-exploration.
As a school, we are continuously working on creating an environment where students can learn skills and strategies to communicate, cope in a positive way and understand differences in each other.
My Project
These culturally relevant books will engage students in reading, set their conversations ablaze, and promote deep theme-based discussions about important issues, such as racial justice, biracial struggles, and identity. Culturally relevant books will inspire students to think deeply about events and characters and will close gaps in reading and promote an ownership in their lifelong reading identity. Reading books with social and racial justice themes will bring awareness to important issues and break down racial barriers.
Speaking about diversity, race, racism, and how to advocate for change with young children is so critical.
It is never too early to have these conversations!
