My Students

“I have too much space in my classroom!”...said no teacher ever. By ‘raising the roof’, I would be able to add space to my class by implementing a reading loft with a writing center below. I aim to spark added interest in reading and writing for those that love it and those who aren't so fond of it.

Our student population is challenged by generational and situational poverty.

This results in absentee and/or uninvolved parents, little ability to focus and follow through, negative social behaviors, and an acute lack of personal responsibility. Ours is a Pre K-5 neighborhood school with 74% of its total student population on the free and reduced price meal program. Students are a mix of socio-economic backgrounds, gender, races, and academic abilities.

My Project

The objective of this project is to maximize the space in my classroom and provide my students with a unique place to read. I feel that this bunk bed -- turned reading loft -- will encourage students to read more. The vision I have is that the reading loft will take the top space while a re-vamped writing center will be below. Both of which are calm centers in my classroom. I would purchase plywood to floor the reading loft and reach out to local carpet companies to see if a carpet remnant could be donated to cover the plywood. Writing Activity Pockets, Ready to Write! Prompt Box and Sequence and Write Story tiles will be added to the writing center to help my kindergarten friends becoming better writers. The leveled writing prompts and pockets will help reach children at all writing levels. The word banks will help students expand their vocabulary about the various topics.

Time at the beginning of the school year will be spent establishing procedures to be safe and successful readers.

I feel that the unique environment will encourage students to become better readers and writers. I anticipate the enthusiasm for reading will show the project’s success. As the year progresses, I will look for students to create their own writing prompts and not fully rely on the pre-made sets, thus fostering creative writing.
