My Project
Everyday I get work with a group of wonderfully creative students ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade. Each day, we focus on building our social and communication skills. Some of those skills include turn taking, asking and initiating play, sharing, and empathy. When it comes to recess, it is time to put those new skills to use.
Indoor recess season is among us, and it is time to put our social and play skills to use.
Our choices for indoor recess currently are STEM Bins, Play Dough, and Pretend Food. Almost every student, K-5, will choose to come to the rug to play "Store" with the pretend food. It has been delightful to see my students sharing, communication, and using their imaginations to play with one another. A small box of pretend fruits is the only dramatic play item we have currently and after seeing my students' interest in it, I have decided to ask for indoor recess items to encourage social, interactive play.
I am asking for dramatic play materials - dolls and pretend pizza/sandwich set. I am also asking for materials to update and diversify my STEM Bins, which are favorites amongst my older kids and reinforce fine-motor skills. The putty is a sensory tool that will help my students self-regulate during unstructured times like recess. I have also had students ask if they could read books during indoor recess, so I have added Board Books and a set of readable books that would be appropriate for my students to use independently. I have added storage bins to organize these materials.
