Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a creative and lively bunch of scholars. I teach every student in the school since I am the Global History I and II teacher. I am also an advisory teacher, as well as the teacher in charge of our LGBTQIA+ club.

My LGBTQIA+ club is made up of queer students that represent every grade in our school, all of which are compassionate, open-minded and extremely imaginative.

Being the only LGBTQIA+ teacher on staff means I can connect with them and help them have the difficult conversations they need to express themselves freely. All of them are eager and excited to discuss the issues facing LGBTQIA+ youth today.

My advisory class consists of 35 bright and passionate students who come from all backgrounds and all walks of life. All of them live in the South Bronx and all of them are students of color. Their identity means everything to them and self expression allows them to blossom in a time where even adults are finding it hard to cope.

My Project

Growing up as a queer teenager, I often used my clothing and accessories to represent who I was and who I loved. The students and I did some research and settled on the idea of getting Rainbow Looms in order to create bracelets of self expression. The Rainbow Looms donated by this project will allow students to better express their identity as well as find a calming and centering activity to complete while we have our deeper socio-emotional conversations.

With these new artistic supplies, my students will be able to find another way to creatively identify and express who they truly are.

I have found that students who have something to fidget at, or something to work towards, are better in not only the academic environment but also in the advisory environment as well. In my LGBTQIA+ club we have done many projects that focus on self expression, but the most impactful have always been when the students created something they could wear. I cannot wait until our class discussions are supplemented by an interactive aid!
