Rainbow Readers is a leveled reading program that I have created to implement in my full day Kindergarten classroom. This being my second year teaching, I have been observing other teachers techniques, attending workshops, and reading many books on what works and does not work when it comes to leveled reading. As the state requirements rise for Kindergarten learning standards, the responsibility for teachers to rise and create quality purposeful lessons becomes more challenging. Along with the high standards that are rising there also seems to be school budget cuts. There simply is no money to buy these necessary tools in enhancing my students educational experience. Through the interactive Rainbow Readers leveled book program, my students will be actively engaged in learning to read through kinesthetic, auditory, and visual activities. In my grant I have asked for a bookshelf storage system which is designed to hold leveled reading books, mini centers that fit into baskets and it even has a book display piece to it! This will be the Rainbow Readers Station! I have also asked for a great Scholastic series of leveled readers which has levels 1-4. This leveled series will grow with my students throughout the school year. To go along with the leveled books, I have asked for writing/reading briefcases. They are filled with hands on materials that help children identify letters, words and pictures. Another item that I have asked for is a grouping of books called "Big Buddy Books!" In team teaching with a sixth grade teacher in my school, we have set up a Big Buddy/Little Buddy program. The big buddies come down once a week to my room and work with students on their reading skills as well as their writing skills. I found some awesome books that tie right into my Rainbow Readers program as well as my Big Buddy/Little Buddy Program. The books are for the big buddy to read and throughout the book, there are stopping points for the big buddy to ask comprehension and higher leveled thinking questions. All of these items will help to strengthen my program. On top of the Rainbow Readers program, I want to add a writing component. My classroom is learning centered based. The grab and write briefcases along with the build and write word center that I have asked for in my grant will fit right into our school's curriculum. These materials will allow my students to master letter sound identification, the 100 sight words they need to know by the end of Kindergarten, as well as being exposed to various writing tools that will help them achieve reading and writing success! This reading and writing program is going to be awesome! My students are wonderful children with lots of energy and a love for learning. I hope that this Rainbow Readers and Writing program will get them excited about reading and writing and continue to develop life skills towards the love of learning and reading.
