My Project

I'm the faculty sponsor of the "Rainbow Royales," our schools GSA Club. A GSA is a "Gender Sexuality Alliance" club where LGBTQ+ youth and their allies can have a safe space on campus to build community, and organize events. Research shows the benefit of having active GSAs, including that schools with GSA have a lower suicide rate for the entire student population, often because GSA helps the entire student body handle bullying.

My LGBTQ+ students are feeling the anxiety around attacks on LGBTQ+ books, and bills like Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill.

After my students advocated for inclusive and comprehensive sex education at the Hawaii State Capitol this legislative session, many of my students experienced "trolls" on social media. It's always hard to be a middle schooler, but it's extra difficult to be an LGBTQIA+ middle schooler right now. Enter: this proposal!

There are no LGBTQ+ books in our campus library. A librarian at an elementary school got a copy of the book "Heartstopper: Part 2" and sent it to me for my club kids. They LOVED the book, and have begged me to get additional copies. This book series will also soon be a Netflix show. My ask today is that you help provide 2 copies of the 4 "Heartstoppers" graphic novels for my GSA kids to enjoy during our club time.
