My Project

I've been the faculty sponsor of the 'Rainbow Royales' since 2017. The Rainbows are an after-school Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) Club where students who identify as LGBTQ+ and their friends can come to share space, and share ideas on how to fight bullying and increase inclusivity at school. During COVID-driven virtual school, it was much harder to connect with these students, and today this proposal is asking for snacks, LGBTQ+ social emotional activity books, and art supplies to rebuild our in-person club.

According to the Trevor Project, just 1 supportive adult in the life of an LGBTQ+ K-12 student, can reduce suicide risk by 40%.

This is why I will always sponsor safe/brave space clubs like GSAs as a teacher. Students who identify as LGBTQ+ in Hawaii are 4x more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol. They are more likely to be houseless, and struggle with mental health. The workbooks I've asked for in this proposal have mini-lessons that help students with standing up to bullies, dealing with anxiety, and building their toolboxes for middle and high school challenges. We use the art supplies for mini-art therapy lessons so that students can paint and create their feelings in art form without it being graded or judged as they might be in an art classroom. We also paint signs to invite other students to special events we host through the GLSEN network like "Solidarity Week," "Transgender Day of Awareness," "LGBTQ+ History Month," and more throughout the school year.
