This year I am teaching 6th grade ELA and need more excellent Middle Grades books! Middle-grade fiction refers to books written for readers between the ages of 8 and 12. These books reflect the reading level, world-view, thematic interests, and maturity of tween student readers.
Middle Schoolers are a special bunch, and Middle Grades books are written just for them!
Although Middle School is just three short years, it is a critical time for their cognitive and emotional development. As they gain more independence from adults, they expand their peer relationships, learn how to navigate group dynamics, and resolve conflicts. At the same time, they are developing a stronger sense of who they are, including their own beliefs and interests, as well as their understanding of group-based identity.
LGBTQ+ books can inform and educate readers about accepting differences and reducing stereotypes. The world is full of LGBTQ+ individuals, and reading about them can help all children prepare for living in this diverse world, whether they're a member of the LGBTQ+ community or not.
