Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students in my class are curious and inquisitive. They come from diverse backgrounds. Their differences make our class community rich and interesting. They are kind and compassionate towards each other’s differences. They love helping each other learn. They come to school every day ready to learn and share what they know.

My students are very expressive about their thoughts and feelings.

They are not afraid to make mistakes or ask questions.

Most of my students do not have books at home to read. They bring books from school every day and bring them back the next. The books in our classroom are outdated which makes it hard for students to relate what they are reading to their life.

My Project

Children’s books are one of the most effective and practical tools for initiating the critical conversations; and they can also be used to model what it means to resist and dismantle oppression. Beyond addressing issues of race and racism, this children’s reading list focuses on taking action. It highlights resistance, resilience and activism; and seeks to empower youth to participate in the ongoing movement for racial justice.

These books showcase the diverse ways people of all ages and races have engaged in anti-racist activism, and highlight how race intersects with other issues, such as capitalism, class and colonization. The majority of books center activists of color, whose lives and bodies have been on the front lines of racial justice work, yet whose stories often go untold.
