My Students

Each day that is spent with our students is a day filled with excitement and rigor. Our class contains a complex mix of multi-cultural backgrounds, varied abilities, and smiling faces. Our students enjoy using the many technological components in our classroom.

This year we have focused on STEM education and Computer Science in the classroom.

The students have participated in many different STEM challenges and began to write and develop computer code. We see the gleam in their eyes when they participate in these activities. This is what learning is all about.

Our school is located in a family oriented neighborhood in Brooklyn. We are a tight knit school and we consider the children in our class to be the future of our community.

My Project

As adults we take certain things that kids love and desire for granted. The ability to print is powerful to children. My students showed me how powerful it is to see your own work printed when we completed our last writing piece. I was able to let them print their published writing piece thanks to the generosity of the donors who funded Race to the Printer 1. After they drafted the old fashioned way on yellow paper, I let them type their work in Microsoft Word and print. When they found out that everyone could print, not just a small group, they cheered! I was amazed that something that I do everyday, without thought, brought this much excitement to my classroom!

At this moment, I found myself inspired to keep this excitement for writing going.

It all started last year with a computer science project. The students created their own computer coding and were able to print their work for further analysis. I immediately noticed a spark of excitement in the classroom from the students when they clicked print from their computer. They rushed over to the printer and held the paper, warmed from the printer, in their hands with bright eyes. It showed me, as an educator, that sometimes the spark is simple. And if I could see that spark in their eyes all the time, they would be more connected and present in their daily work.

We work on many different writing genres throughout the school year. My goal is that all 35 of my students will be able to print at least 5 of their published pieces using the supplies I have requested. It seems like a very small goal but to us it means the world. We need ink and paper!
