My Students

My students are part of the new Visual and Performing Arts Academy or VAPA at my school.

They are very diverse, coming from all different ethnicities and backgrounds, brought together by their love of the arts.

My students range from gifted to special needs, including a few children who are doubly exceptional, who are gifted with special needs. They are creative, excited and truly inquisitive. As VAPA students, they are driven by an arts-integrated curriculum with a service learning component.

My Project

Our school library is pretty dreary, and has posters that date back to the 1980's as its only aesthetic! When I asked students if their was an area of our school they would like to help improve with an arts project, they all agreed the library was in need of some love! My students plan on designing and creating quilted wall hangings for our school library, based on scenes from their favorite books.

Our request includes fabric, die cuts, a sewing machine with notions, fabric cutter, paper cutter and embellishments to design quilts, including texts to help us learn more about sewing patterns in order to create quilt hangings for our school library.

We will use cut paper and markers to create mock ups of the quilting designs, and sequins, glitter and beads to embellish the designs and quilts. My students will learn how to measure, follow directions, create patterns, and most importantly, give back to their community. They will be a part of making our school library more inviting, and leave their mark on our middle school facility.

The supply list is sustainable from year to year, insuring that more than this year's students will benefit from this gift. When choosing items to include, our whole class was involved, with an aim toward encouraging future classes to follow in their footsteps as creators. As a Performing and Visual Arts Academy, this project will teach our students how they can use their passion for the arts to better their community. The students will also be able to build on the knowledge they gain to explore their passions for design and literature.
