Help me give my students a much-needed sensory corner in our Montesorri classroom. The sensory materials and bins will help my autistic students soothe and address their sensory needs. They also have fine motor needs.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
All children want to learn. They have an innate curiosity about the environment around them. But sometimes, children struggle with simple tasks such as sitting in a specific area for a specific period of time or staying focused. This makes learning impossible. Children with special needs struggle with things such as socialization, attention, movement, and emotions.
Preschool and Kindergarten students are trying to figure out their learning styles, which change as they get older.
In a classroom with neurodivergent students learning at different levels, it would benefit them to have a sensory corner that can help address their learning needs and aid in their social-emotional learning. It is also beneficial to provide a range of techniques that cover different abilities and to create lessons that cover multi-sensory abilities, addressing all senses: tactile, visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
I teach at a public Montessori school in an urban school district. Since the pandemic, many preschool/kindergarten students have struggled with sensory deficits that are interfering with their learning. These are not just atypical students but also our typical students.
Having a sensory corner in my classroom will help me and my co-teachers help our students improve their social and emotional learning. I am currently studying sensory techniques, and I can embed them within my Montessori teaching method using the materials on my shopping list. Montessori does have a sensory area that addresses the senses, but some of my neurodivergent students' sensory deficits may be more involved than what the Montessori material can address. When provided with these materials, students become much happier to learn if they do it in a way that makes the most sense to their minds and bodies.
