Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Everyone needs the opportunity to share their thoughts, my students especially. I am a 12th grade teacher in one of the most underserved areas in New York.

Growing up in the neighborhoods that they have grown up in has not been easy for my students. I have spent many hours hearing them share their life stories. Their stories touch me and inspire me and I want the chance to inspire them in return. I will be teaching a poetry elective this upcoming semester. Poetry has changed my life and I believe I can instill that same love for the genre in my students.

Journals would give my students a place to write poems and reflect on their experiences in and out of the classroom. Many of them turn to writing as a way to "vent" and these journals could be their outlet.

I know from past experience that the joy students will feel, knowing that someone cared enough to give them this gift, will ignite their creativity and inspire them to reach new heights with their writing. Please help.
