Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students have diverse learning styles and different unique interests. Our students read on different levels and are able to access and bring home reading materials based on their level every night. Our students live in a low-income area in the South Bronx. They come to school eager to learn and we want to motivate them to be actively engaged in their learning by asking questions, researching information, and finding their own answers and opinions. Our classroom is an inclusive classroom, meaning we have some students with disabilities. Each school year we teach our students to be accepting of our differences and unique abilities. They collaborate in groups and learn to work together.

We want to encourage our students to find their voice as readers, writers, mathematicians, and leaders so that they can go back to their families and their community and make a positive difference.

My Project

Our third grade scholars face many challenges as we navigate a new and quite different school year! There have been many changes. We are back teaching and learning in-person, staying 3-feet apart and trying to follow other Covid-19 safety protocols!

We try to keep our students safe and healthy!

Our students are often thirsty throughout the school day! It is preferred that students do not share/use the public school water fountains. My co-teacher and I have been encouraging students to bring in water each and every school day. Some students use single-use water bottles and refill them as necessary. Other students are not able to bring in water. We would love to be able to provide EACH student with a reusable water bottle that they can use throughout the day to quench their thirst, and use it again the next day! Research says that our brains are mostly water and keeping hydrated helps improve concentration and cognition and helps balance mood and emotions.

In addition to the water bottles, we have not been able to keep up with the demand for pencils this year! Our students are busy writing sentences, researching facts, and solving math problems in their notebooks. We would love to provide students with quality writing tools that they do not have to share. Having a quality pencil is key because they will not break often and the erasers won't leave marks on student work. We hope that we can fuse our requests together so that we can quench our students' thirst for learning!
