My Students

Student T said to me yesterday, "Read a book? I haven't wanted to read a book since I was like seven." T is a tenth grader. At times, my students become compliant readers; however, I want them to be exhilarated by literature and to find a deeper value in the written word.

My students are creative, energetic, and curious.

I look forward to working with them each day and I want their experience in English class to be worth more than a grade. Innovation becomes evolution in the classroom, but budget cuts can leave innovation to sit in a plan for the future. With new literature and fresh new perspectives, my students become inspired, excited about the possibilities sitting on the book shelves. I can breathe new life into the curriculum with every new resource; therefore, to add to the canon that exists in the book closet at our school and to more sufficiently prove to my students the value of reading, we need an amazingly written, inspiring, heart-wrenching, literary giant: "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls.

My Project

In "The Glass Castle", Walls details her struggles moving around America, her family often homeless and impoverished due to her parents' stubborn nonconformity and irresponsibility. Her parents, though, are not entirely neglectful; they are truly dynamic and they do love their children. Walls spent the last years of her adolescence in a poor Appalachian town in West Virginia, an area close to home for my students. The sharp, detailed honesty of Walls's memoir pulls at the heartstrings of the reader. Students will be inspired by her strength, enthralled by her writing style, and moved by all the characters' dynamic personalities in this novel. It is one of the richest modern memoirs and would prove an immense asset to our class curriculum. We will read the novels as a class, analyzing universal themes of family and growing up. Students can learn more about their own morals and families, their own choices and capabilities, through the life of Jeannette Walls.

I want my students to experience literature that changes them, that encourages them to read more.

"The Glass Castle" is the kind of literature that a teenager, otherwise occupied by internet socializing or video games, just can't put down.
