My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that fascinated you? Some of my students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not yet encountered non fiction books that bring their world to life. Their classroom library needs an upgrade!

This dynamic group of 3rd graders attend Maine's most ethnically diverse school.

The school's amazing international student body represents 32 nationalities! Within the school, 45% of the 360 students are English Language Learners, and almost 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The 23 students in room 206 represents a tremendous snapshot of this diversity. Our diversity is seen as an asset as we capitalize upon our knowledge and build on our strengths. One thing that would not be viewed as a strength in the classroom is our modest library. In my first year teaching third grade (in only my third year of teaching), I have not amassed a great quantity of books and the majority of the books I have are borrowed or rounded up from ones that other teachers had discarded...most of which are fiction. My students are voracious readers and I want to make sure that I am providing as many opportunities to them to be inspired as I can.

My Project

The more high quality books my students read, the more they ask to read. I know that the only way they will succeed in life is if they learn to love reading. By providing them with brand new books for their classroom library, you will be helping my students take ownership of their lives and their learning. I am lucky in that my students constantly ask to read more books. Unfortunately, my district does not have the money to make their desires a reality. Reading is fundamental to a good education. Please help me provide my students with the resources necessary to foster my students' love of reading, and their thirst for knowledge about the world around them.

By making a donation you are making a difference.

Giving a class the gift of good books is like giving them keys to their future. Reading encourages us to think and increases our thirst to learn more. Avid readers have improved cognitive abilities, and are better analyzers and problem solvers. These books will help hone their analytical skills, and open their eyes to the world around them.
