This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Que quiere decir ? Use the dictionary! In my three years working at CPEHS, I have learned a lot about providing a culture of success and pride to help the struggling students at my under funded school located in East Harlem, NYC. Because it is a small school that does not offer many elective classes, I am the only Spanish Teacher in the High School and teach grades 10-12, but only Levels 1 and 2 (there isn’t enough funding to go beyond the basic graduation requirements). Many teachers give endless hours and often buy most if not all of their supplies, because of the lack of funding. Each year, I’m surprised by the lack of materials and items the school provides for the teachers to furnish their classrooms. When I first started teaching there, the textbooks were older than I was. Needless to say the culture and Spanish language was not up-to-date. I received a classroom set of textbooks, but nothing else. The students do not have workbooks, textbooks for home use, or dictionaries. This makes effective teaching of a Foreign Language really difficult. There are many creative projects that the students do on their own that requires them using new language and words that are not typically in the regular classroom book. The solution for this re-occurring problem is to get a classroom set of Spanish-English Dictionaries so that the students can expand their Spanish knowledge beyond the typical first-year vocabulary. They are also using this without the teachers’ help and learning valuable research skills that they can use in other classes and later in life. If there are donors that would like to help make the Spanish 1&2 classes OUTSTANDING and engaging for the school year, they should fund this project. These Spanish-English Dictionaries will help all of the 10th grade students and every student after that enrolls at CPEHS. My students and I are anxious to start using these right away! Thank you!
