My Project

Skateboarding is no longer a "fringe" activity, and children (and adults) are finding the joy of "playing on a skateboard." It provides physical activity as well as transferable skills such as communication, problem solving, and goal setting. Skateboarding also provides a sense of community and helps build friendships that can last a lifetime. It is with that mindset that I chose to develop and supervise the Bridges with Boards activity as part of the Portsmouth (Ohio) City Schools After School Mall program.

As this diverse group of students grow and develop their skateboarding skills, they need equipment which will continue to challenge them, especially on days when we cannot go to the local skate park.

This ramp will be used in conjunction with the ramp we received through last year's DonorsChoose project to help students set goals, challenge themselves, help other students learn and grow, and have fun while doing it. Successful students, while build their own confidence and skills in this program, often become mentors and cheerleaders to help others in the group learn and build their own confidence. Those kids often end up helping and cheering for others.
