Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from all part of the city. They come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 85% of our students receiving free lunch. Our students are dedicated, hardworking and extremely eager to always put their best foot forward. They are extremely grateful and do all they can with what they already have. With your help, our students will be able to do even more if they receive the right supplies and opportunities to keep on working hard and making progress.

My Project

The Business of Sports School addresses an urgent need. An estimated 140,000 New York City teenagers are currently two or more years behind in school or have already dropped out. Developing schools that successfully educate many more students to succeed in high school and beyond demands more relevant curriculum and increased innovation and involvement of the corporate community.

Both Mayor Bloomberg and Mayor de Blasio have made innovation in Career and Technical Education a citywide priority, noting that rapid changes in the global economy demand more complex skills.

The Business of Sports School gives young people of New York a running start towards success in one of the city’s most important—and exciting—industries. As we continue to navigate through this unprecedented time. We want to resume with our efforts in breaking the academic achievement level of our students and those in their families. But we must help take care of the students' social needs first in order to bridge the gap.

73% of our student population qualify for free and reduced meals. 20% of our student population are either displaced from their homes or reside in sheltered housing. According to Whirlpool’s Care Counts™ School Laundry Program, teachers around the country believe that approximately one in five students encounter difficulties when it comes to regularly having clean clothes. Many of the teachers surveyed also believe that lack of clean clothes causes students to be frequently absent, an issue that affects 5 to 10 million students each year. Many are without work or working low income jobs. Laundry has taken a back seat in many families budget. After a while unclean clothes have become the norm. The laundry project provides relief for those struggling to get by. Each load of laundry washed enhances the basic quality of life of the participants.
