My Students

My students LOVE science. What's not to love...it's engaging, interesting and lots of fun.

My students are enthusiastic fourth and fifth graders in a highly capable program.

I teach math and science to both classes and have recently added reading informational text to my curriculum. After studying the new Common Core Reading Standards and taking several classes as part of my professional development, I now have a clear vision of what I need to do to reach the new standards. Students are asked to read more informational text than ever before and at an increasing level of complexity through the year. After assessing my students to find out their informational reading level, I need to provide them with a large selection of science trade books at their complexity level. I thought this would be easy but after doing some research I discovered that the majority of my books in my classroom library are not leveled using the new standards of complexity.

My Project

Yearly the National Science Teachers Association publishes a list of outstanding trade books in science. Starting with their list for the last three years, I selected books that also had a Lexile complexity score. From this list, I carefully selected science trade books that range from early fifth grade through the end of sixth grade. After being placed in small groups of two at an appropriate complexity level, students will read the books together. As groups finish a book, I will challenge them with a more complex text slowly moving them up the ladder of complexity. I expect each child will read at least eight books over six weeks.

This project will not only challenge my students with increasing complex texts, but it will also give them a solid understanding of science.

I will have the tools to teach both the Common Core Reading Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. Because the majority of the books are available in hardcover, the books will be used for many years.
