My Students

My Title I school is tucked into a neighborhood. All of the students receive free breakfast and lunch as well as a third meal at the end of the school day. Our students are excited to come to school to learn and interact with their friends. As the reading specialist for my school, I interact with each and every student throughout the week. We love to share and discuss books with one another.

From kindergarten through fifth grade, my students are growing their love of books on a daily basis.

Students often stop to share with me what they are currently reading. They will stop me in the hall to ask if I have another copy of a book they saw a friend reading. They will thank me for providing new and exciting books for their teachers to read aloud. Students in various grade levels will talk and laugh about books we have read as a school. My students' increasing love of books is growing a culture of literacy in our building.

My Project

Exposure to books is one of the key factors in motivating students to read. The books found on the Virginia Readers' Choice primary book list, have been carefully reviewed and selected because of the quality of writing and lessons that may be learned. Every student in our school will have the opportunity to listen and/or read each of these nine titles (along with 1 other) and then vote on their favorite. Their votes will be counted along with all other votes in Virginia to decide which of the titles will receive the 2019 Virginia Readers' Choice Award for the primary level.

Books are the springboard to learning across the content areas.

With the entire school reading the same ten picture books found on the Virginia Readers' Choice primary book list, our students, from kindergarten through fifth grade, will have common ground for discussions around quality literature. The books on this list cover multiple genres and styles of writing, which will provide much needed exposure for our students and will act as a catalyst for further learning experiences. Such experiences may include researching inventions, writing persuasive arguments to vote for a favorite book, making connections to personal lives, and looking at problem solving abilities. These books will help provide collaborative learning experiences among students across all grade levels.
