This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Our school is about 600 to 700 students in Greenville, SC. 100% of the students are on free lunch. The last past 2 years have been really tough on my 3rd-grade students, but every day they continue to persevere. The school is title 1, so the majority of my students come to school with very little, but love to share the little that they have, which always warms my heart.

Within our daily schedule, we have many class discussions, the most important ones stemming from our literacy block.

Within this block, we have discussions on different books that we have read. We do this within a small circle in the classroom, we call this the "come to the carpet time." During this time, I have noticed so many differences in my students. I've found that my more shy or self-conscious students tend to respond in very low voices, in hopes that if they are wrong, everyone won't hear their wrong answer. This, in turn, disengages other students in the circle because they can't really hear them. I find myself at times repeating out loud what the students said, and this to me steals their voice. I want my students to hear their voices and find confidence in their voices. The Qball will do just that. It will allow all students to be heard at the same level and keep the engagement of other students. This will build great self-confidence. Also, kids love balls, this will also make them eager to answer questions. With covid rearranging our classrooms, this will definitely help my students and me with the distance that separates us.
