Puzzle It Out in the Library

Help me give my students puzzles for our library! Students love working on puzzles with friends or as a quiet activity. I've noticed that they particularly love puzzles that are challenging but not too hard!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Over the course of my 16 years as a high school librarian, I have noticed that students struggle with what to do during their free time. Students want to take a break, so they do not always want to do work. Some students who comes to the library just want a quiet, safe space to be. No matter the reason why they come to the library, they often want something to do!

Jigsaw puzzles encourage students to focus on the puzzle while still engaging with their friends--it forces them to put down their devices and actually talk to each other and work together as a team!

It also gives a quiet student something to focus on and not feel like they are just sitting alone. I have had such wonderful conversations with students over puzzles. There have also been times where I have sat with a student in companionable silence working on the puzzle. Slowly, those quiet kids tend to open up over a puzzle. There is something incredibly freeing about not having to make eye contact with something that allows you to share more than you might if you were face to face.

I have discovered over the past few years that students love colorful puzzles that are challenging, but not too hard. If the puzzle is too hard, students get frustrated and give up. 500 piece puzzles that have objects/drawings that are clearly defined and not impossible to pick out in the pieces are the sweet spot. These puzzles would be used in the library during student's lunch periods and after school time. The puzzles are a community project, meaning that any student from any of the six schools on my campus can work on them and we leave each puzzle out until they are completed.
