My Students

My students love to work with their hands to make. The only limitation is their own imagination and creativity. Learning and applying the design process, my students create objects for a variety of projects as stand-alone assignments and as part of their regular classroom curriculum.

My students work to build collaborative skills and perseverance by working together to solve problems.

They attend an urban elementary school (K-8) in Pennsylvania and range in age from 5 to 14, with the focus of this project being on our 2nd through 8th-grade students.

My Project

These supplies and tools will allow my students to learn how to prototype as part of the iterative design process. Currently, we use cardboard and construction paper for our prototypes, but foam board and the tools to work with it will allow them to make far cleaner and professional-looking versions of their designs. This is of particular importance as we are integrating STEM into our other subjects. Students in all grades will use the foam board and tools to complete numerous projects over the course of the year.

These materials and tools will help me to teach our students the skills they need to prototype outside of our makersace and thrive in a hands-on, inquiry-driven setting.

Often my students get discouraged when their ideas do not turn out like what they see in their minds. Being able to craft much more professional prototypes will help diminish this concern. Students will work in groups to use the cutting mats and rulers to hone their skills in the elementary grades and then use the special cutters in the upper grades to make much more involved projects.
