Our school provides black and white ink, but science fair judges always respond better to color. My student try to live up to the standards and expectations put before them.
This is a small rural town.
There isn't a lot of money here, but we are not short on creativity. The students in my class are hardworking, lively, and very creative. This is a really great bunch of children! Recently, I noticed they look really sad after they create graphs, charts, and other documents with color only to print it in black and white. I gently inquired what was wrong. They say, "It's just not the same." They want to see their work in print the way they designed in digitally.
Students are required to include graphs and charts to display results from experiments on their science fair boards. Students often spend a lot of time putting together beautiful colorfully illustrated graphs and charts, only to print in them black and white. Often students have black and white pictures printed that would be much more "telling" in color. Students whose families have or can afford printers with color ink, usually do better at science fair. If students are willing to spend time putting together these beautiful projects, then it should reflect their effort upon completion. Many families in the area don't have printers, so if this need is not met at school then it just will not happen.
I have worked hard to find differing forms of technology for my classroom.
I believe the more students are exposed to different forms of technology the better. This color printer and color ink will give them the joy that comes with putting together excellent work. They will be overjoyed to actually print in color. Perhaps that is a small thing when you do it all the time, but my students don't and I can't wait to watch them see their work come to life.
