Putting It All Together with Biology Dissection!!

My students need 20 Carolina Perfect Solution preserved pigs for our end-of-the-year dissection activity. Students will work in groups of four and each group will investigate and be responsible for their own specimens.

My Students

All college prep students should be able to participate in the eye-opening, exciting and (hopefully!) inspiring experience of dissection as a part of their biology curriculum. I teach biology at a large charter high school in California that serves its local community of students.

Our school has one of the lowest socio-economic standings in our district but our students' performance rivals that of the most affluent schools.

We are a college preparatory high school and a few years ago our science department decided that all students involved in biology (not just the Honors/AP students) should be able to participate in the end of term pig dissection activity. This hands-on experience allows all graduates to be prepared and excited to pursue scientific study at the college level. However, with an increase in students and recent cuts in our budgets, we have been scrambling for enough dissection tools, materials, and funding for specimens.

My Project

These dissection pigs will ensure that each student gets the chance to participate in this "real life" science experience. They learn the body systems then in the same day, they see what they look living in an actual organism! I am always amazed by the engagement and care that the students take during dissection, they truly feel like scientists and are able to take responsibility for their own learning.

I have seen the effects of this experience on my students and it is remarkable!

Students are simultaneously challenged and intrigued. This opportunity is a must in creating student citizens who are scientifically literate in our society.
