This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do tests stress you out? Well, imagine being a struggling reader overcoming a learning disability or an English language learner! These high stakes tests can be extremely difficult for this population of students. We want to give these tests our all!
My students are 4th & 5th grade special education/ESL students.
They come from a high poverty area and often do not have the help or resources at home to build their reading skills. They attend a public school in New York. They truly enjoy listening to stories or reading ebooks on the computer, but when faced with having to read grade level texts on their own, they can get overwhelmed and shut down. Help them do their best!
My Project
I have looked into StoryWorks magazine before & think it's incredibly engaging for my students! It includes many different genres of reading for the kids & often contains many pop-culture references (which really grabs their attention & gets them reading). I think this magazine will be a great way for my students to get motivated to read longer texts, on grade level & work towards building their comprehension skills. This in turn will help them with their test-taking confidence!
In many cases, my students have been told they "can't" do something.
I'd like to change all that. I tell them all that they have potential & that I will help them reach any goals they set. I want my students to feel that they CAN succeed. If they can build interest in reading, they can develop reading skills, & eventually master some basic comprehension skills. No one is interested in boring, old test prep, but with StoryWorks, we can look at test prep with a completely new twist.
