My Project

The students at my school represent a variety of identities and experiences, and I constantly strive to select texts for them to read that will both expand their understanding of the lives of their classmates and, at other times, reflect their own lived truths back to them. Over the course of the year, they already read texts as varied as The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, There There by Tommy Orange, and Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation, a collection of essays edited by Kate Bornstein and S. Bear Bergman.

Help me bring another voice into the curriculum, that of Charles Yu and his characters, who are Asian American.

In this era of Covid, so much vitriol has been directed to this community, and I want to combat that ignorance by bringing Yu's voice into the classroom. I also want Asian American students at our school to see their experience placed alongside that of their classmates so that we can all complicate and expand our idea of what it means to be a citizen of this country.

Students read a digitally scanned version of this novel last year and loved it. Help me bring physical copies of the book into the classroom in my effort to reduce — or possibly entirely eliminate — the presence of screens in this moment when we're coming to understand how potentially damaging they can be to the mental health and well being of adolescents.
