Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our children are dreamers. They are eager and motivated to learn. They come from families who are hard-working, and they are teaching their children that same motivation for learning. Many of our families fall below the national poverty levels; some experiencing the situation of being homeless or are home insecure. In addition, English is a second language for the majority of our families or they are bilingual households.

Every child deserves a great start.

Our children deserve no less than great. Our children are getting ready for Kindergarten, and it is our job to prepare them! When parents and students are able to worry less about where materials needed for school will come from they can put paychecks towards other things and will make attending school more accessible leading to a greater outcome for school readiness.

My Project

My students love music, in fact, music is one of the main ways that preschool-aged children learn. We try to sing and play instruments as often as possible.

Help me put rhythm and learning into the hearts of my students.

I plan to use these instruments to teach children about other cultures. What instruments do they play in China, Mexico, Africa? How do students in other countries make music? These are the questions I will answer as we practice using a Den Den or a Djembe or any of the other instruments we are seeking to add to our classroom.

I also plan to use these instruments to teach math and literacy. I will have students tap out syllables in words on the drums or tap out each word in a sentence. Students will make a musical pattern that we can copy and repeat. We can count how many taps a friend makes on the drum and practice writing that number.

In addition, having these instruments will help me teach my students how to use these music instruments as well; teaching them how to respect and care for the instruments. Children will be able to express themselves musically. We already have rhythm sticks and shaker eggs so I know that having more choices for students will make a world of difference to their learning.
