My students need learning through play and investigation tools, such as play dough stampers and Design and Build Centers. The very diverse levels of learners in my classroom makes a need for activities that can be done at multiple levels supporting inclusion of all.

My Students

My amazing class is filled with diversity and a love for learning! My classroom has children of many different abilities but one thing they all love is the arts, music, dance, singing and acting. The class has lots of different strengths and they having been working hard to become a team and a real community this year.

Our school is located near a military base and a lot of the students in my class have a parent serving in the US Armed forces.

Often there are students in my class who have a parent or both parents deployed for long periods of time. Because of our location we often have students attended and withdrawing throughout the year.

My Project

My students’ work hard in the classroom but often I find we are short on resources and over half of the learning is using the old paper and pencil method. What they need is more opportunities for hands on leaning and, yes, learning through play! One of the most exciting things on my list is the Design & Build Engineering Centers. This would provide students a way to play while they explore, make a hypothesis, create student driven experiments as they play and find the conclusions. Another great item on my list is the letter stamps for play dough. This item can be use two ways, one the class will makes its own play dough so, again science, trying different recipes and finding the best one. Second, during our center time this will provide the students with a new and more playful way to learn new vocabulary and sight words. The texture of the play dough will provide opportunities for multi-intellence learning including visual and touch. Some more items I would like to highlight on the list are the rhythm sticks, egg shakers, activity scarves, and wrist ribbons. Our school is an Arts Integration school having the musical instruments for everyone in the class will provide opportunities for all to engage with the arts. The scarves will not only be included in music exploration but can become puppets allowing the student to act out books and create and write their own stories and books.
