My Students

"Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known" - Carl Sagan

As a teacher of high school students on the autistic spectrum, I am inspired and amazed on a daily basis by the skills my students display.

Differentiated instruction is key to learning. The skills my students display vary greatly. Many of the skills in my classroom are "splintered", where students show they are proficient in one area, while they may struggle in others. Students are responsible for working in small groups with the teacher, as well as working independently at "workstations". The purpose of workstations is to mimic responsibilities that students might have out in the job world, such as organizing, sorting by category, and making change.

My Project

Our students have taken on an entrepreneurship this year in opening up The Riverview School Cafe. Our main objective for our MS/HS program is to create a self-sustaining school based job program. The Riverview School Cafe will be a real cafe located in an empty classroom of our high school building. It will have items to purchase and areas to sit and practice social skills, cues, and situations. We will be able to provide students with a real world understanding of running and maintaining a business while being in the comfort of a school building. This includes but is not limited to, pricing, supply and demand, inventory, and peer collaboration and product creation. My students need Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), batteries, conductive thread and plenty of copper tape in order to create custom holiday cards and The Riverview School Cafe apparel for sale within our school store.

The reason I am requesting these resources is to bring our Cafe to the next level!

We would like to include greeting cards and light up apparel in our Cafe to attract a wider audience. I will be instructing students within my Vocational Classroom on how to create greeting cards and clothing that include circuitry to brighten up the holidays and express their creativity.
