My Students

My students in our low-income, rural community are fun-loving, sweet, yet some of them struggle with engagement, especially when it involves traditional subjects or conventional approaches to education.

My students of wildly differing abilities thrive when they can collaborate on engaging activities, especially when I provide a teen-friendly environment for them to explore!

They love to laugh and move and think together, especially when I can show them the joy in learning academic subjects! School may not always be their natural, primary focus, but they are bright, confident, caring and excited to try new endeavors, especially when I can connect literacy to their lives in the real world. What can I say? I love them!

My Project

My students in our school's honors Literature course need class sets of books so that small groups of them can choose the ones they read, and yet still have the experience of reading together.

We want to explore our history and our future through genre-bending books like 1984, A Handmaid's Tale, Brave New World, The Devil in the White City, Scythe, The Things They Carried, and Zeitoun.

Through smaller literature circles, my students will be able to converse more deeply about their ideas, create unique projects to demonstrate their new knowledge, and communicate to others about their understanding of genre and literature.

These class sets of diverse, intense exemplars of fact-based historical fiction/creative journalism and classic dystopian novels will promote the benefits of independent reading and collaboration.
