Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I once was a student who sat in the same seats as my high school students. I knew the struggle, thus I made the conscious decision to be the change I wanted to see. Who are we? We are a public high school located in Miami, Florida. Although we are one of many, our school is known to be a historical landmark positioned in a small area called Overtown.

Although our school is rich in history, students lack access to various resources, which as a result, affects their level of motivation and academic success.

We are a Title I school, which means more than 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Students from this violent, stricken area are from low-income housing developments or shelters. Like most children, our students are curious, eager, and open to new experiences. Unfortunately, their economic situations do not allow them the opportunities afforded to other students. It is my desire to show my students that success can come from our community and with your help, I believe this can be done!

My Project

The Covid-19 Delta Variant is the newest and deadliest form of infection that has taken the world by storm. While it is our desire to start school physically, parents and teachers are concerned with mandates and other political issues that may or may not help with transitioning out of the pandemic. With little to no time to waste, I as an educator must take action in order to ensure that the learning environment is safe, healthy, and conducive to learning.

Families need to be assured that the air in the classroom environment is free from particles and things that may cause students to become ill.

Adding an air purifier to our classroom, along with other precautionary measures would act as an added layer and a preventative measure against transmitting Covid-19. It is our desire to "start smart," "start strong," but most importantly, "start safe!"
