Pure Elements and Rockets

My Project

I teach a high school physical science class. We learn about the elements on the Periodic Table, discuss how they react with other materials, and balance chemical reactions. We use pure sodium to react with water for exploding pumpkins. This real-world phenomenon engages students in a way that helps them take more interest in the content of chemistry. So often we use videos and images as they are more readily available. This real-world experience excites students and encourages them to study chemical equations.

The same real-world experience is applied to rockets.

It is more exciting to engineer a rocket from scratch and launch it than to use a simulator or watch a video. Being hands-on in the classroom is the key to student engagement.
