Puppets Promote Literacy

My Students

The children in our class range in age from 3 to 5 years. They are culturally diverse and very spirited. The majority of these students are also English language learners. While they can't always communicate through words, they find common ground through play. They especially enjoy fantasy play, during which they can collaborate on numerous scenarios without ever having to share the same language.

My students are also economically challenged, and don't always have the resources at home to support learning, so school is where their educational foundation is established.

All of my students have a curiosity and enthusiasm for gaining knowledge. They have the most wonderful imaginations and enjoy exploring the classroom and beyond.

My Project

My preschool students love fantasy play! Their abilities to create elaborate settings and story lines are boundless. We already use two puppets to promote social-emotional skills, and my kiddos really relate to them. They share their personal stories and are very comfortable interacting with these puppets. They regard the puppets as members of our class and special friends.

I can't imagine a better vehicle to promote literacy than using these friendly-faced puppets.

With the help of these captivating visual aids, I will be able to introduce letter-sound connections in a fun and engaging way. My students will all delight in interacting with these new classroom friends, returning to them again and again, learning their letters in the process. I anticipate each and every one of the puppets receiving a name that matches their letter and initial sound. What a great motivation!
