My Students

My little ones love drama class. They approach theatre without fear or inhibition. They love performing and being on stage. I head the theatre arts department at a Title I all-girls school and because of them, I have no problem saying I truly enjoy what I do. Their morning greetings, laughter, and enthusiastic learning have a way of brightening my day. I've missed being with them face to face. I love that my school teaches to the "whole girl", inspiring them to be their best self starting in kindergarten.

We teach them to understand what it means to be courageous, powerful, and their sister's keeper.

These young ladies, from kindergarten to eighth grade, carry themselves like scholars. They make me proud and it is my goal to make sure they have everything they need to be successful.

My Project

Our return to the classroom is going to bring challenges we have not faced before, so we are going to have to be creative. I want to use theatre to help my little ones work through any questions or feelings they may be having a hard time sharing surrounding quarantine and the pandemic.

Using puppets will allow those students that may be having trouble articulating their feelings the opportunity to say what's on their mind with a kind of anonymity that can alleviate the fear of being judged.

My kindergartners and first graders will be coming to the building for the first time and I want to make the transition as easy as possible. They will be able to speak through the puppets and say those things that they might not feel comfortable saying as themselves while having fun with puppet play.
