My Project

Currently, I teach students with special needs, ranging from second through sixth grade. We are a cross-categorical classroom with diverse backgrounds and eligibilities. I was lucky enough to have a puppet stand donated to my classroom which sparked the idea for this project. Two of the major deficits that my students struggle with are socializing and literacy. In efforts to best support my students, same age peers come into our classroom for Reading Buddies. We listen to stories and retell them while emphasizing socialization.

The recipe for this project calls for the integrating the following ingredients; students with special needs, same (similar) age peers, puppets, and literacy.

. Peer interaction for socializing is crucial for students in my class to learn social cues and overall interaction skills. What better way is there to integrate socialization and literacy than through a puppet show?

Because children learn through movement and visual support, I feel that utilizing puppets for both socialization and literacy will be effective and fun. Please consider helping me fulfill this opportunity for my students!
