My Students

My students are a group of 5 and 6 year old from low-income family's. During this pandemic, I want my students and their families to be excited about learning. I know that some of my students will enter Kindergarten understanding how to engage in conversations while others will find it more difficult to express themselves. Being that our school will be doing remote learning at the beginning of the year, it is important for all of my students to connect to instruction in a way that will make them feel safe as well as successful. Their speaking and listening skills will be an area that I will focus a lot of my attention on in order to make sure that my students have a clear understanding of what is being taught in the classroom during these unpredictable times.

My Project

My project is titled "Puppet Talk." During our morning meeting and reading time, I will use puppets to help engage students and encourage two way conversations among students. In the beginning, the puppets will be used by me to help students connect to instruction. For students who may not be as outgoing as other students, I will model how to use the puppets to communicate (virtually) with the teacher as well as listen while the teacher is speaking. Later the students will create their own puppets to help them practice these skills.

By donating to my project, you will help me teach students how to use speaking and listening skills to communicate effectively, collaborate, problem solve, and make decisions.

In my opinion, using hand puppets will contribute to me having more meaningful lessons. Through "remote learning" my students will be able to use their own puppets to practice speaking and listening with family members. It is my hope that I am able to teach students valuable skills that will help prepare them for success in future grades.
