Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a small public elementary school in the Bronx, NY. Our school is committed to providing all students with a well-rounded curriculum that engages students in hands-on, project-based learning as well as developing social skills and building character.

50% of our student population are from low-income families.

We work hard to ensure that economics doesn't get in the way of a quality education. Our students are eager to learn. They need a hand up not a hand out.

My Project

Imagine a ball flying through the air. Students hands are raised in anticipation of catching this hidden microphone. The Qball is the modern day "talking stick". Today's classrooms are quite noisy and not necessarily with students talking or laughing. Within the classroom, there are many sounds that students and teachers are competing with in order to be heard by all. Sometimes, there is construction, fire and police trucks, traffic, kids playing in the playground, and air-conditioning are sounds that teachers and students are competing with on a daily basis.

Research shows students that participate in class discussions are more likely to understand and retain what they are learning.

So, class discussions are important in helping students learn how to actively listen, build on ideas of others and make connections. As educators, we are constantly learning and improving our understanding of the best ways kids learn. Therefore, we can improve our teaching practice to match students learning styles. The Qball is an effective tool that can help in improving the quality of class discussions and increase student engagement by giving a voice to our quieter students and focusing students to listen to the speaker.

This year I have focused on improving the quality of classroom discussions using various protocols and this tool will help to enhance this work. It is important that students learn how to learn from each other and not to be so dependent on the teacher for providing answers. No one including adults likes to sit and listen to someone talk for extended periods of time. Instead, we learn best when we are actively involved in the learning process. The Qball is an innovative and creative way to engage all students in the art of discourse.
