This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in an inner city school with 100 percent poverty level.
Our diverse group of students are smart, capable and interested in conducting more hands on science projects and learning about the application of science to their real lives.
They have promise and drive to learn, but our school lacks the ability to afford many of the supplies that would help them to grow. My students are constantly requesting more STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) projects to enhance their learning.
My Project
These two items will allow my students to do a variety of different projects. First off, students will have hands-on manipulates to learn the concepts behind two key simple machines: Levers and Pulleys.
Then, students will use these same supplies to create a synthetic human arm and hand out of household supplies, pulleys and levers.
This arm will need to demonstrate the use of a 3rd class lever and a variety of different types of pulleys.
Students will have the chance to combine their knowledge of the human body and their knowledge of physics to engineer a functional prosthetic limb.
