My Project

My students come from all walks of life—some are learning Spanish to connect with cousins, others to talk with their soccer teammates. They come from both extreme wealth and housing insecurity, but they all share one thing: a need for engaging, accessible books that make language learning meaningful.

The best way to help students acquire Spanish is by giving them books they actually want to read.

Research shows that when students have access to interesting, level-appropriate stories, they naturally absorb vocabulary, sentence structures, and grammar—boosting their literacy skills without the frustration of memorization or worksheets. Post-COVID, literacy skills have declined, and attendance is a challenge, making it more important than ever to provide students with reading opportunities that build confidence and motivation.

That’s why I want to keep building my classroom library filled with funny, fast-paced, and culturally rich books that keep students turning pages. These books are the heart of my classroom. Students will start class with self-selected reading, discovering everything from quirky pigs on an unexpected adventure to the escapades of a hot-dog eating pigeon. They’ll read independently, in pairs, and during small-group discussions, where they can share their favorite moments and new words they’ve pick ed up. Whether they’re beginners or more advanced learners, they’ll find books that match their interests and abilities—helping them build confidence in Spanish at their own pace.

Reading doesn’t just improve literacy—it also improves attendance. When students feel successful, engaged, and in control of their learning, they show up. A well-stocked library will make Spanish class a place where they want to be, not just a class they have to take.
