Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a 2nd grade teacher at an inner city school in South Gate, California. We are a Title 1 school in which 100% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our student body is 99% Latino. I truly feel lucky to have a 2nd grade classroom full of eager young minds that love to learn everything from science, social studies, language arts, math, art, PE, Spanish, to Ethnic Studies!
The rigorous learning we do in class doesn’t just end with written class work.
The learning leaps onto a digital platform on the computer as well. We use our Chromebooks to continue the differentiated learning adapted to each child to support their reading, blending, and in math. They even expand their use of the computer to create creative digital artwork. One of the most important components of our use with computers is to take beginning, middle, and end of year assessments that show how our students are learning throughout the year. It is vital to have headphones during these assessments because they provide noise canceling silence to allow focus as well as the essential ability to listen in on the prompts and/or questions that are read to them during the assessments.
In addition, I love how these headphones help my students listen to stories that they get to explore on a daily basis to build their fluency and comprehension. I love the idea that as my students get to learn to read or even just build higher reading stamina they get to be whisked off on an imaginary adventure or transport themselves to a place back in history as they read along to a book in class. Please help my students spark their love for learning with these vital headphones that they need every day!
