Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Unfortunately, I have not been able to meet my students in person since my district is fully remote and I have a feeling that I won't have the chance to this year. However, despite knowing them solely on a computer screen I have grown to love and care for them in a way I don't think I have any other class I have had in over 7 years.

They came into this virtual learning environment ready for whatever was coming their way and really stepped up to the plate.

It was rough at first, but they have never given up and continue to put their best foot forward. They have shown strength and flexibility that I have not seen in any other fourth grade students. I could not be prouder of them and I know that they will succeed no matter what challenges come their way.

My Project

Teaching in this virtual environment has been a challenge for many people around the country. However, being in a low-income district it has been especially hard to meet the needs of all of my students. There is no one size fits all when it comes to teaching strategies and being fully remote since last March has proven to be extremely difficult to reach all of my students. While my district has been amazing at getting technology into the hands of all students, many have parents that are unable to be home with them so many of my students are learning from cars, workplaces or in daycare settings.

A lot of my students are unable to be on for the full day and so with a second monitor I can break out into small groups to meet with those students.

Most of my students are very behind, while some have thrived in this environment. Therefore, it is impossible to expect them to all be on the page and able to complete the work the others can. Being that I only have one computer, breaking out into groups is not possible. We are not allowed to leave students alone, so the only way I can teach a small group is if I am still able to keep an eye on the other group. I feel with this second monitor that I will, hopefully, be able to provide more one-on-one instruction with the students that desperately need it.

In addition to using the monitor, I have also asked for a track pad that I plan to use for math. It is very difficult to use a laptop track pad to accurately draw the arrays and use pictures as examples for such young kids since a lot of them are visual learners.
