Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is the only one of its kind at the school, teaching Computer Sciences from a accredited Curriculum (Teals from Microsoft). Our CS program is part of both the Math and STEM department of the school. I know my students can succeed. I have seen design and ingenuity displayed over and over again. Many of my students have been handicapped, and not given the tools to succeed.

My school is a set in an urban community, at the heart of the city of Providence.

The students are performing arts major, very talented in music, theater and video production but have to overcome many obstacles. 93% are minority, 90% percent live in poverty and 20% are facing homelessness.

My Project

Our high school learning community has never had technological access, with the exception of internet and Chromebooks provided by the school. Currently, our students are learning to code, but there is no interface or physical projects that connects their coding to the real world. They are looking at a program, and not seeing a final product. When we combine the items that are being ordered, it allows students to be inventors, and engineer remotely.

We want MakeyMake and Circuitscribe to be directly accessible to our students, for explorations and creativity in engineering.

Their providers had free digital curriculum, and we have video conferencing to showcase students creation to prove mastery.

The second part was programming their devices, using AI technologies, for interactions. MicroBit Hummingbird came in handy, especially with a digital curriculum to prep the students online, and enough equipment where each student can be sent a set home to work on. Creating the nervous system of their invention. Then video conferencing and presenting their final designs and sending a link with their finished accompanied code.

The process ends with students sending their final digital model to the school to be printed. We wanted a 3D laser cutter (GlowForge), that allows for personalizing their final design as well as building their model. The device does etching and cutting, more efficient and faster than a 3D printer for rapid prototyping. Saving student files on USB and sharing it to our device for prototyping.

Last part, we wanted students to test their coding abilities remotely but see how it would interact in the real world. Vex, PiCar, the electronic kit & Airblocks are programmable, both have online simulation to test code and build design, compete with other schools and demo at the school.
