My Project

By providing funding for this iPad and Bluetooth speaker, you will open a world of opportunities for students who currently live in a hospital. The iPad will be used specifically for supporting the communication of students who cannot speak. They will have the opportunity to express themselves using uniquely designed communication apps to fit their needs and abilities.

My students have complex medical needs, which can cause deep feelings of isolation and lonliness.

This makes it imperative that as teachers we provide opportunities for peer connection. Being that music is a universal avenue for connection, we often use it in our instruction to support students in joining a shared experience. Beyond this, through music students are provided with communication opportunities, as they can contribute to making songs, and using their new words to sing along to familiar tunes. To best listen as a group, it would be very helpful to have a Bluetooth speaker.

Everybody has had a time when they feel misunderstood. It feels frustrating, isolating, and defeating to be misunderstood. That experience is universal, but not everyone has had to deal with this on a moment by moment basis, due to the lack of access to the words used as our primary communication. The experience often leads to low mental health and morale amongst my nonspeaking students as they are constantly shut down and underestimated. On the contrary, when we feel understood, we feel connected - the basis of human wellness and positive emotions.
