Sensory Integration activities can help students with autism spectrum disorders self-regulate, remain calm and focused, and prepare to learn. I work as the unit coordinator in a high-need special-education school with 60 students diagnosed with autism.
It has been estimated that as many as 80% of people with autism exhibit sensory processing disorders, which affect the way they perceive and regulate sensory information, in turn affecting their adaptive behavior, their ability to focus on and process information, and their gross motor development. Issues involving sensory processing often contribute to stereotypical and idiosyncratic behaviors, which a child might utilize for the autonomic purposes of regulation, providing stimulation, calming down, or as a coping mechanism for filtering sensory overload.
Various interventions employ sensory integration to address this area of need. I have personally witnessed success with interventions involving rhythmic entrainment music therapy, deep pressure massage, heavy work, vestibular therapies, yoga and movement, and other sensory-based techniques.
These materials will provide all of the students with autism in my school with a "sensory diet" that can address this area of need. With your generous donation to this very worthy cause, you will make it possible for my students to regulate and calm their bodies, filter out overloaded sensory stimuli, and prepare themselves to remain focused, on task, and ready to learn! Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity!
