Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third grade students are mostly English Language Learners who come from families of low socioeconomic status. They speak Spanish and are mastering English. They come from humble homes who can't provide them with many material things. These families do their best to make ends meet. Some share their food and shelter with relatives, but despite these disadvantages they are eager and motivated to learn. They come to school with a smile and are ready to prepare themselves to succeed and take pride in their work. .

My Project

Throughout the school year, my students have been reading books from different authors and have begun to admire these authors and their craft of writing. During writing workshop, they use these books as mentor texts and some have began to find interest in becoming a writer. With these materials provided, they will be able to publish this year's collection of writing pieces. Students will type their stories and paste them on the blank pages of the hardcover book and use the construction paper as a design for the background of every page. Once my students are done publishing their books, they will not only go through the writing process, they will have hands on experience of the making of a book and will learn about the features of a book, e.g. title, title page, table of contents, headings.

Publishing books will motivate my students to take pride in their writing.

They will apply the editing and writing skills they have learned throughout the school year. It will force them to reread their work and will make them understand the importance of it. These published books will also become a keepsake treasure for each individual.
