My Students

My Sensational Second Grade students are predominantly from inner city Los Angeles. Many are from low income and limited English speaking homes.

Depending on the area of the district we are being compared, so changes the way my students are classified.

Over the years which I have been teaching, we have been everything from the top of an inner city area to the bottom of the westside.

Since so much of the traditional curriculum is geared toward higher achieving students in the wealthier areas, my goal is to try to create a positive mindset regarding learning and create an atmosphere where everyone can feel successful no matter where they live.

My Project

My teaching goals for the future include finding new ways to teach the wide academic range of students in my class as individuals more than as a group. To do this I am learning to level students reading from levels A-Z so each student better has the opportunity to choose from just right books. For example, students who have has scored at a Level G can go right up to the G book basket knowing there will be many items there they can read and comprehend. They will also feel pride in knowing they have passed so many previous levels. I am hoping this will be a more positive way of learning for my students since they will be starting out as successful readers versus struggling ones.

For my classroom library I am requesting a variety of leveled readers and games including Ocean of Color, The Haunted Library, a Guided Science Readers Parent Pack, Ray The Spy, Here's Hank, Bob Books: First Stories, The Long Dog, The Judy Moody Uber-Awesome Collection, and Bananagrams.

I already had a student sit down to read with me saying he wasn't good at reading. I started him off at a lower level assessment so he could walk away from our meeting feeling successful. After he completed the book without one mistake I commented that I though he had said he couldn't read. His comment was something like he guessed he was wrong! Our meeting there ended for the day because I wanted him to carry that sense of pride with him for a few days before I gave him the next, more challenging assessment.
