My Students

Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. Many also come from military families. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100% of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need, whether it is an academic or a personal need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a MakerSpace and are now working to extend our STREAM clubs.

My Project

Kate Middleton stated "A child's mental health is just as important as their physical health and deserves the same quality of support." This is my core belief as a school counselor. I offer small group and individual counseling for topics that pertain to student mental health.

The Born This Way Foundation found that a kind environment, with peer support, and appropriate resources available to the student helps improve student mental health.

I have found small group sessions, in a supportive environment, with appropriate resources can make a lot of difference. I currently have 40 small groups in grades k-5. Students are allowed to refer themselves, and parents can request.

We cover topics such as incarcerated parents, alcohol/drug addiction, grief, anger, ADHD management ( or could include OCD or other conditions based on student need), family issues, serious illness, worry/stress, and non traditional families (if appropriate, LGBT concerns). Most schools I know generally do teacher recommended groups on behavior and do 3-5 groups. I feel students and parents should have the opportunity to request services.

I have worked hard to maintain current, research based materials to use with the groups. The books I am requesting help fill some of the gaps for a few topics such as LGBT support, worry, stress, and suicide.

My art teacher, has published a book "Goodnight Mr. Vincent van Goug" I would like to get some copies of this book to give to families who are dealing with a suicide.

The journals are a key part of my small groups. Every student is given a journal so that they can express their feelings. They keep them in my room, and know I only read the it if invited.

The safe environment with peer support, and materials do make a difference. Thank you for your support.
